Grade School Religious Education

St. John the Baptist's Religious Education Program is one designed to help bring up our young people within the teachings of the Catholic faith and to help prepare our young for the reception of the Holy Sacraments.

In today's society where religion is banned from the public school classrooms, our program becomes ever more important so that our youth will come to know the richness and fullness of our faith, beliefs, and traditions.

GRADES 1 - 6

Grades 1 -6 follow the "This is Our Faith" program. Below are some of the subjects covered:

God

The foundation of our faith is our love and trust in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus

The life of Jesus - a life of prayer, service, and love - is a model for Christian living. We learn through his example and teaching. He calls us as members of His Church to a life of ministry.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a source of strength, guidance, and inspiration to us. The Holy Spirit guides us in living out the life to which we are called as Christians.

Sacraments

The Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist - help us grow in community with Christ and His Church. Comfort, strength, and healing are received through the sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. Holy Orders and Matrimony are sacraments of vocation. Both involve the beginning of a lifelong commitment of love and service.

Church

The Church offers a message, a tradition, and a call to service and ministry. As a ministering community, the Church builds a community, preaches the word of God, worships and serves. The Apostles' Creed summarizes the basic beliefs of the Catholic Church.

Morality

The Ten Commandments, Jesus' commandment to love, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us in living the way of Jesus.

Bible

The Bible contains a variety of information about God and prayer. The Bible is divided into books which contain chapters and verses.

Prayers

The prayers and precepts taught are: The Sign of the Cross, The Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Prayer of Sorrow, Grace Before and After Meals, Apostles' Creed, Ten Commandments, Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, and Stations of the Cross, and more.

Vocabulary

A religious vocabulary word is introduced in each chapter. Words like transubstantiation, anointing, Eucharist, corporal, reverence, pope, initiation, apostolic, Pentecost, etc.

Other

Chapters for celebrating Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Feast of All Saints, and Good Friday; and chapters for honoring Mary, Saint Francis of Assisi, and Mother Teresa.

This program is designed to take each student on a journey toward a deeper understanding of our religious beliefs and traditions.

GRADE 7

Grade 7 students review material covered in Grades 1 – 6. There are two tests that must be passed.

GRADE 8

Grade 8 students study the Gospels and the Book of Acts using Scripture and two movies "Jesus of Nazareth" and "AD"

High School Religious Education

GRADES 9 - 11
Grade 9 - 11 students will be using a lectionary-based program called “Spirit" which is a 3-year program that explores Catholic doctrine comprehensively across the Church’s three cycles of Sunday Scripture readings. “Spirit” is designed for today’s Catholic teens. It invites them to dialog with Catholic tradition (scripture and doctrine, Creed, commandments, sacraments, prayer, Catholic social teaching). It tells the Good News television can’t sell – mission trips, work for justice, moments of forgiveness, standing by friends, today’s saints. Students will be taught Catholic beliefs and traditions via a video series called "What Catholics Believe About..." Topics covered are: the sacraments, baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, Mary and the Saints, the mass, the church, the Bible, prayer, death and the afterlife, the new Catechism, rights, responsibilities, freedoms and the New Age. Each video includes a short quiz and is answered as part of the video.

GRADE 11 (CONFIRMATION CLASS)

Grade 11 students will, in addition to the above, complete a short workbook with their sponsor, answer a series of questions (homework), and attend a Confirmation Retreat. All high school students must do a minimum of 30 hours of community service before being confirmed. Twenty hours must be completed BEFORE they will be accepted into the 11th Grade Confirmation Program.

Adult Religious Education

Taught by Father Van Beek, the Adult Religious Educational program is held the second Tuesday of each month, November through February from 7-8 pm in church hall. The class dates for 2007/2008 are November 13, December 11, January 8 and February 12. Past topics include teachings on scripture and basic doctrines of faith. This program is extremely popular and well-attended. Please bring your green New Testament Bible from the last session. If attending for the first time, additional bibles will be available. On-site babysitting service is available for parents with small children.

Mission Trips

Every year the parish participates in county-wide mission trips with other Catholic parishes. It is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of SJB to make new friends and see other parts of the country while serving those less fortunate. Mission trips usually last approximately one week and have included destinations such as: Denver, CO; New Orleans, LA; Virginia Beach, VA; Mobile, AL; Kearny, NJ; St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica.
